The business of radio imaging is unique in that I, as a voice-actor and producer, often get a chance to work directly with my competition. This gives me some perspective on how other v/o's operate. What other industry do you get firsthand knowledge of your competitor's product because market conditions force you to use a competitor instead of your own product? I like to think of it as "co-opetition". It's a word coined by NASCAR on FOX analyst Darrell Waltrip to describe how drivers in competition with each other, tend to work together at times during a race to make it to the finish. Through this coopetition, I've learned a few things about how to service one's clients. It astonishes me how a number of voice talents appear to "sit on" work.

I added video production to my repertoire as a radio creative services director nearly four years ago. In that time, I graduated from manipulating still images and animated text to filming HD video and using chroma key (blue & green screens). Since I saw a need for it before my company did, I couldn't get management to foot the bill for the equipment I needed. So I took on the burden of purchasing the necessary equipment to take my videos to the next level. In the next few paragraphs, I'll share my trial and error with you to help make your case to management on what you need to make awesome web videos.

It all started with a question, "What would a sweeper 'look' like?" In my mind's eye, I saw the station logo tumbling into frame with a soundtrack that followed the motion of the moving image. Thus, my first video close was born, for WDSY/Y108 in Pittsburgh.

It seems to me that people outside of radio don't get the immediacy of our medium. We audio-only types are used to writing, voicing and producing content same day, heck, even within the hour. So when it comes to creating video for radio station website, we have to apply the same skills and sensibilities we use for sound to video.

When I first entered the radio business in mid-1990s, at the dawn of the golden age of consolidation, (though it’s doubtful anyone will reflect upon that time in such romantic terms) I knew that my life as an on-air broadcaster would be limited. Content is king and even then I was certain that, at some point, I would make the transition to being content provider.
